What motivates us?

Nigeria faces various crises, including the Boko Haram insurgency and banditry, leading to displacement and extreme poverty. JAREI addresses these issues by providing sustainable humanitarian and developmental services in the identified thematic areas.

"No One Is Free Until We Are All Free" - Martin Luther King Jr.

According to UN OCHA, in the North-East, more than 8.4 million people need humanitarian assistance, with women and children constituting over 80% of those in need. Approximately 7.9 million people in the North-East, 2.5 million in the North-West, and over 2 million in the North-Central regions are affected by the ongoing crisis.

The urgency of the current situation combined with our passion to alleviate human suffering guided by the core humanitarian principles cumulated in the establishment of JAREI.

Conflict and Displacement

The ongoing Boko Haram insurgency has resulted in widespread displacement and severe humanitarian crises. JAREI intervenes by offering emergency relief, shelter, and support to displaced populations.

Extreme Poverty and Food Insecurity

Banditry and criminal activities have exacerbated poverty and disrupted farming activities, leading to food scarcity. JAREI combats this through agriculture-related programs that promote food security and sustainable livelihoods.

Health and Nutrition

The compounded crises have led to poor health conditions and malnutrition. JAREI addresses these challenges by providing access to improved healthcare, nutrition programs, and promoting public health initiatives

Climate Change

Climate change acts as a cruel multiplier of humanitarian needs in Nigeria. Droughts and erratic rainfall cripple food production, heighten competition for resources, and spread diseases. Rising temperatures further strain water supplies, while extreme weather events displace people and destroy infrastructure. Additionally, there has been frequent recurrence of flooding nation-wide further worsening an already complex situation for vulnerable groups. This web of challenges weakens health, pushes more into poverty, and creates a desperate need for emergency aid.

The Needs

Urgent Intervention Causes
Urgent Education Need in the North-West

Education in north-west Nigeria faces significant challenges, with a high number of children, especially girls, out of school. As of recent reports, over 60% of children in some states like Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara are not attending school. Across the region, more than half of primary school-aged girls are not in school, translating to about 536,132 children out of school in Katsina State alone. According to UNICEF, this is largely due to poverty, insecurity, and social norms that deprioritize girls' education . Efforts by programs such as Educate A Child (EAC) and initiatives by UNICEF have seen some success, bringing hundreds of thousands of children back to school, but the need remains vast action is required NOW!

Healthcare Deficit

Urgent healthcare is needed in Sokoto where JAREI's staff and volunteers are providing support to health centres. Some 65,000 internally displaced persons are majorly affected. JAREI is supported internal systems through training, community health care and free medical care.

GBV and Conflict

Women and girls in Nigeria's conflict-affected regions face significant protection issues, including gender-based violence, sexual exploitation, and abductions, exacerbated by displacement and inadequate access to healthcare and legal support. In the North-East, more than 8.4 million people need humanitarian assistance, with women constituting a significant proportion of this number. Addressing these issues requires establishing safe spaces, providing comprehensive healthcare and psychosocial support, enhancing legal frameworks, and ensuring law enforcement to protect and empower women and girls. JAREI is mobilizing funds and strategic partnership to support of our team on the field in addressing some of these challenges in a meaningful way.

Vulnerable Women

In North-Central Nigeria, the ongoing humanitarian crisis has severely impacted women, with estimates indicating that over a million women are in urgent need of assistance due to displacement and violence. Women face significant challenges including gender-based violence, limited access to healthcare, and economic hardships exacerbated by the instability in the region. These needs were further worsened by the impact of climate change. JAREI in the next 12 months will reach 10,000 women with a integrated resilience package addressing all their major needs.
